Resident Leadership
Residents in the West Side know what their neighborhoods
need. They know what it takes to create change. One way
that residents create transformation is by working in
community-based organizations that advocate on behalf of
neighborhood residents. Through these organizations,
residents develop strong relationships with one another
and links to vital information or resources. We call
this social networking, and it is the lifeblood of
MC-SA.

Community Resident Leadership Class: Jan 26 -April 8, 2010
One requirement of strong and supportive neighborhoods is that residents have authentic
engagement and participate as decision makers in the
West Side. It is also vital that leaders are
well-equipped and trained to serve their communities.
Making Connections supports strategies that promote resident
engagement and leadership development in a number of
ways.
Those who know our residents best take the lead...
“I work for Making Connections, but I’m a resident first,” said Marylou Mendoza, part of the research team for “My Voice Matters.” Marylou has been with Making Connections-San Antonio going on about two years now and as a resident of the Westside she is very aware and protective of what is being offered to her community. Her self interest and love for her neighborhood has helped her find a connection and significance in the Resident Leadership Certificate Program. The Leadership Program is being offered at the Westside Education Training Center every Tuesday and Thursday, and as of March 11th Marylou along with John Alcoses, with Vecinos of the Westside, are actually facilitating five continuous classes throughout these next few weeks.Marylou graduated in the first class that was offered for Leadership Engagement and her reason for taking this class was to make sure that it was appropriate and effective for the individuals involved. After going through the training that certified both Marylou and John, they are able to take p art in the facilitation of the modules. “I’m very proud of the fact that I can do this. I want to continue teaching.” Marylou said that the most interesting part is the people involved. “They are very well versed and leaders in their own fields, in their own areas. They’re a great group.” Describing her first day as nerve wrecking and a bit difficult because although they had prepared every minute of the class, they were missing a major element, and it was building a relationship with the individuals. “Now that we know our students, the class is so much easier to teach” said Mendoza. “I am very appreciative that MC-SA believed in me enough to allow me this opportunity.”
